In my ENG 2010: Introduction to Prose Fiction and Nonfiction class, I wanted to demonstrate how to close read, how to read with a pen in hand, and what to focus on in a passage, what to underline, what to think through. I decided to turn my very analog chalkboard into a “smartboard” by projecting a passage from I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and working through the close reading and annotations with the class.
