Nearly a decade ago, the edited collection Techno-Orientalism: Imagining Asia in Speculative Fiction, History, and Media came out from Rutgers University Press in 2015. Edited by David S. Roh, Betsy Huang and Greta A. Niu, the collection would become an important touchstone for the study of technoculture, speculative literature, media studies, and Asian American studies. If it had come out even a few years earlier, I think it would have been a big influence on my doctoral work. Now, as I work through my turn to, relationship with, and version of Asian American studies, the collection is always in the back of mind.
Ten years later, in July 2025, the sequel drops! Techno-Orientalism 2.0: New Intersections and Interventions, again published by Rutgers, brings together a slightly larger editorial team in David S. Roh, Betsy Huang, Greta A. Niu and Christopher T. Fan and offers a wider ranger of essays and perspectives–including my piece “Looking for Asianfuturism: Asian American SF and Games of Color.”
I look forward to seeing the book in my hands. I am really thrilled and lucky to be included in the collection. Many thanks to the editors for working with me to get my essay to publication! It is going to be an amazing book, and I am sure it will just as foundational as the first volume.
