Happening today, Wednesday, January 22, 2025, 4-5 PM PST online: https://bcnm.berkeley.edu/events/109/special-events/6220/game-over-games-as-research-art-as-exploration
Join multi-media artist and game designer Elliot Bear Yu and scholar Edmond Y. Chang (Ohio University) for a virtual studio visit that redefines the intersections of art, play, and research. Elliot’s transition from academia to his MFA showcases innovative approaches to scholarship, including the creation of a groundbreaking MA thesis entirely within the 3D modeling program Blender—a project deemed too unconventional for traditional academic frameworks.
Repairing the deep tensions between traditional scholarship and artistry, Elliot and Edmond will explore how play and exploration are central to both research and artistic practice. Discover how Elliot’s work bridges the worlds of gaming, design, and embodiment, challenging norms and redefining what counts as knowledge production.
I am looking forward to hearing about Elliot Yu’s work and experiences in art and academia. The conversation and discussion should be a great one! Thank you to Evan Sakuma [NAMI] for inviting me to be part of the UC Berkeley Studio Visits series.
