Thanks to Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung (BPB) or the Federal Agency for Civic Education in Germany and the “Masterclass Game Development” conference for inviting me to give the four and final keynote on queergaming. The Masterclass focuses on challenging fascism and right-wing extremism. I got to zoom into the conference on Friday, November 8, 4-5 PM CET, and speak to a room full of thoughtful and interesting people.
My talk entitled “Queergaming Futures” defines what I call technonormativity and the implicit and explicit norms of code, algorithms, computers, and digital games, presents two short games to define and demonstrate the constraints and affordances of queering mechanics and queergaming, and finally, ends with a few possibilities for countering, disrupting, and reconfiguring technonormativity to imagine queer(er) games and design.
